LAND AND SEA STORIES

JOURNAL #4

SEASE Journal

Land and Sea Stories

SEASE Journal, a collection of sea and land stories, curated by Alberto Coretti - founder of Sirene Magazine - and narrated by our ambassadors. Dive into breathtaking experiences that nourish the soul, celebrate the beauty of untouched nature, and adventure around the world.

If sailing is a religion, the Club Naval de Yates Micalvi is its sanctuary. To reach it by boat is an aspiration for those, like SEASE, who have the sea and sailing in their DNA.

CHAPTER #4

In Patagonia, it's chilly and windy even in summer, with Antarctic currents constantly reminding you that beyond the ocean to the south, only the Pole lies. At the southernmost point of Patagonia is Cape Horn, the place most feared and respected by sailors throughout history, distinguishing seafarers into two categories: the cape horniers - the few who have rounded it - and the rest of the world.

The importance of Cape Horn.

Even in Patagonia, for a sailor and his boat, the land doesn't end where the Cape gives way to the open sea but a moment before: at the last yacht club where they found mooring and hospitality. The last stop before the Horn is the Club Naval de Yates Micalvi in Puerto Williams, on the Beagle Channel in Chile.

The origins of the Club Naval de Yates Micalvi.

Apart from its latitude, what makes this sailing club unique is its location: it's housed within a beached ship named Micalvi. Launched in 1925 and stretching 55 meters, it was originally a German merchant ship, sold to the Chilean government in 1931 with a load of ammunition. After several mishaps and restorations, it was declared a national monument in 1976.

The southernmost city in the world.

Puerto Williams is a safe harbor before one of the world's roughest ocean stretches but also a sliver of civilization in an area where Mother Nature remains supreme: the icy waters of the Beagle Channel, snow-capped peaks, forests, streams, and animals living harmoniously with humans. The rusted sheets of Micalvi provide shelter to a few families of wild mammals. In addition to seals peeking from portholes, a group of beavers is often spotted swimming around the old hull.

Only for sailors

Inside the Yacht Club, only crews are allowed, so only men and women who share that absolute passion for sailing are met. It's from this passion that they draw the energy and inspiration for the SEASE collections.
